Slummin' in Singapore
Sensational - a round of applause please!!
I expected Singapore to be clean and modern.I expected a certain level of organization.
I expected to be impressed but actually
I was overwhelmed and delighfully so. Wandered the city taking in the sites and sights smiling at the genius and gumption of this tiny Island Nation. From the bathroom at the Singapore Airport to the Marina Hotel -- it was utterly astounding.
You get that sense in the minutes after you arrive in a new city.
In this one;
- The currency exchange " we take any country currency of any denomination sir " - huh? Well the rate must be sheer banditry. No sir we pay close to market rate - and they did. Huh?
There is still however the human side of the city. Carefully camoflaged by the glitz and glamor are ordinary people going about their business. I walked alot which I think is unusual though discovered some amazing palces back behind the beyond.
Again with the food now.....
Singapore is home to a curiosity. It has a street stall with a Micelin star. What? It's the only one in the world and quite an upsetting phenominon to French chefs evertwher. Mon dieu!!.
The line-up of course was horific - the accomodations cramped and like many successful restaurants you sit where there is a place - and that is likely not with friends or family. The soya chicken is really the only dish they do or at least thats what the star is for. so - verdict - mmmmm pass thanks. It just wasn't that good.
The next night I found myself in a dimmy lit market area with nary a white face or Gucci bag in sight! Here I ordered the duck from a stall where an old woman huched over a stove while the lineup scurried away with order after order of the duck. Ahhhh - this is the palce to eat all right.
Once seated, I drooled apprecaiatively and I crunched through the meal and licked my lips after the lasy morsel. Now this - my frinds - dserves a Michelin star.
